Twilio has announced a cellular communications platform that uses APIs to power a wide range of IoT devices. Twilio Programmable Wireless makes cellular connectivity programmable. The solution allows developers to program SIM cards so they can access mobile data in more than 120 countries for IoT solutions.
As the number of connected devices continues to grow – most estimates suggest there will be in excess of 20 billion devices connected to the Internet by the end of the decade – being able to program and manage their connectivity will continue to become a challenge. For businesses developing global solutions that require access to multiple networks, it can be challenging to procure SIM cards that match the business’ needs.
Twilio Programmable Wireless allows developers to access a self-service, pay-as-you-go API so they can build one solution that will work across multiple carrier networks.
The API lets developers see where and when SIMs are connected and monitor data consumption in real time with individual SIM reporting, as well as take advantage of security features such as 2FA and access to failover tools. Twilio says the platform provides a 99.95% uptime service level agreement.
Twilio developers can order a SIM and begin working on a connected device project immediately. Programmable Wireless is available now via the console on Twilio.com with different pricing options for developers with different needs. After purchasing the SIM for a one time fee, customers pay a monthly recurring SIM charge in addition to usage-based data charges.
