The City Of Sydney is giving away 1000 trees at Sydney Park this Saturday – including food-bearing varieties like oranges, lemons, grapefruit, pistachio and limes. There’s no catch: simply rock up and choose a tree to adopt. Here are the details!
Sydney’s adopt-a-tree program is part of a wider initiative to increase the city’s urban canopy by up to 50 per cent by 2030. The council has already planted over 12,000 trees since 2005 – and it wants residents to help reach its environmental target.
1000 trees will be up for grabs from 10am Saturday, 7 April 2018 at Sydney Park. The available trees range from small shrubs to 20-metre Jacaranda trees! (Presumably, extensive planning and council approvals are required for the latter.)
There will also be a sausage sizzle and the chance to chat with City staff about what trees to adopt and how to care for them.
If you’re a gin drinker, we recommend picking up one of the assorted citrus varieties. This will allow you to add a free, DIY twist of lime to your cocktails fresh from the garden.
To keep your lime tree healthy, you’ll need light, well-drained soil with adequate moisture and preferably full sun coverage. You can find additional maintenance tips and the full list of available trees over on the City Of Sydney website.
