Your garbage smells bad. If you get one of those airtight lidded bins, your garbage only smells bad when you open it, releasing a wet rancid fog right into your face. The best fix is to separate your food waste and store it in the freezer. But unless you’re composting that food waste, that’s too much work. Instead – or also – add some essential oil.

Apartment Therapy recommends soaking a cotton ball in an essential oil, then sliding it between the garbage bag and the can. You’re mostly just masking the smell with something pretty. But citrus or tea tree oils also fight bacteria, says the blog. Mint oil repels rodents and neem oil repels bugs.
Make sure you specifically get an essential oil. I, a clichéd husband, bought some lemon extract, which isn’t strong enough. Luckily we had some rosemary essential oil sitting in the cupboard, long past its “best by” date but still plenty odiferous. We soaked a cotton pad, and it sure perfumed up the place. Be careful about over-scenting; for a few days, every time we opened the can, the whole apartment smelled like camphor.
