Reader Alec submitted this desktop that brings a little bit of Windows 10 into macOS, but only the good parts. Mission Control gets a lovely unified look, and there’s an app launcher at the bottom that functions like a taskbar. Here’s how it’s all set up.
If you didn’t know better, you’d think that Alec’s desktop was actually a Windows PC, but watch the GIF above closely, and you’ll no — it’s actually a Mac, running Sierra. It’s just been ever-so-slightly customised to bring in some familiar aspects of Windows, and as someone who works cross-platform, I can appreciate that. Alec’s tool of choice here is Übersicht, a customisation tool we’ve highlighted before.
Once you’re familiar with it, here are the components you’ll need:
- The Winter wallpaper bu Ian Ape
- The Übersicht customisation suite for macOS
- The Morning Clock widget for Übersicht
- The WeatherNow widget for Übersicht
- The Battery Charge widget for Übersicht
- The Blur Widget to make the dock background translucent
- The cDock utility to customise the macOS Dock
- The Bartender utility to customise the macOS menubar
- The LiteIcon utility to tweak the system icons
- The Metro UI Icon pack to customise the system icons
Alec explains:
MacOS Sierra with menu bar on autohide. Themed dock using cdock and liteicon to give it a Windows feel.
By hiding the MacOS dock background using cDock and using the blur widget for an ‘artificial’ dock background allows for ubersicht widgets to overlay the dock. This allows the battery widget to display in the bottom right corner.
All in all, I think the finished product looks good, and every time I see one of these Übersicht-customised desktops, it makes me want to do some interesting tweaking to my Mac at work.
