Everybody lost their minds when Microsoft dropped the bombshell that it was bringing Linux Bash to Windows 10 for the upcoming Anniversary update. Windows Insiders will have fun with this feature ahead of everybody else through the new Windows 10 Preview Build 14316 which also adds a ton of nifty Cortana improvements. Here are the details.

In this preview build, you can run native Bash Shell on Ubuntu on Windows 10 through by turning on Developer Mode and jumping through a few hoops. You need to go into Settings > Updates & security > For developers and search for Windows Features and select Turn Windows features on or off and enable Windows Subsystem for Linux (Beta). Then open Command Prompt and type in “bash” to install it.
This might be a bit confusing for the average user but the inclusion of Bash is aimed squarely at programmers and developers who probably won’t mind going through a bunch of steps to get it up and running.
As for Cortana improvements, here’s a list of handy new features on Microsoft’s digital personal assistant:
Cross-device capabilities:
- Low battery desktop notifications so you know when your phone is running out of juice when you’re using your PC.
- Locate your mobile device on the PC through geo-location. Cortana is also able to call your phone to find it.
- Shared map directions across devices
- Easier Cortana set-up process
Microsoft has also updated Extensions for Microsoft Edge, which was introduced in the last preview build.
