People have been complaining about how Microsoft is seemingly forcing eligible Windows users to upgrade to Windows 10 through annoying pop-up alerts that appear on the taskbar. The vendor is offering business customers a way to avoid getting those pesky alerts.
Organisations running Windows 7 Pro or Windows 10 Pro, excluding the enterprise editions, are eligible for a free Windows 10 upgrade. Some companies may want to manage their Windows 10 upgrade as a whole and do not want to install the operating system on different PCs individually. In these instances, the “Upgrade To Windows 10” pop-up alerts are redundant and are just plain annoying.
Microsoft has released instructions for IT departments on how to stop the Get Windows 10 app, which prompts automatic upgrades through Windows Update and the taskbar pop-up messages. The instructions can be found over at the Microsoft Support page.
Microsoft is also making the Get Windows 10 app available to small businesses in the US later this month, which will trickle down to other markets shortly after. The small businesses must meet the following criteria to take advantage of the app:
- Running and licensed for Windows 7 Pro or Windows 8.1 Pro
- Configured to receive updates directly from the Windows Update service (i.e. updates are not managed by WSUS or System Center Configuration Manager on those devices)
- Joined to an Active Directory domain
“We believe these changes balance the needs of small businesses and organisations that want to take advantage of the free Windows 10 upgrade offer to do so more easily, while providing organisations of all sizes the tools and controls they need,” Microsoft said.

Great! Now, is there an unofficial way too for us non businesses? I kind of did by downloading windows 10 and then unchecking the box as optional update. My PC is eligible for the upgrade, however it just gets stuck on 15% and gives me an error after 6 hours restoring my previous windows.
A Domain that does not has a WSUS…. so what small business?
