Kyle J. Byard, writing for The Art of Manliness, warns that going out to eat doesn’t fall into this category. Some activities you may want to try that do include:
- Go on a walk or hike
- Make a meal together
- Visit a museum and discuss the exhibitions
- Take a class together

I always thought this was why you should do the movie first THEN dinner. If nothing else, at least you had the movie to discuss afterwards.
My suggestion would build on the museum idea, but add that you do a guided tour somewhere you haven’t been before. You don’t have to talk during it (as you listen to the guide), then have some interesting points to discuss afterwards.
(And I’m not sure how making a meal together would necessarily give you much to talk about. How much you like their kitchen? What king of veggie peeler they prefer?)
