HBO’s Game Of Thrones is regularly cited as the most pirated TV show in Australia. Interestingly, this hasn’t stopped it from becoming the most popular download on Foxtel’s new BoxSets service. Since BoxSets launched at the beginning of the month, the series has been downloaded more than 94,000 times. That’s a lot of Daenerys fans.
Foxtel rolled out its BoxSets offering as part of a major channel and pricing shakeup that kicked off on 3 November. The BoxSets channel is a new entry to the Drama Pack that provides “anytime” access to Foxtel’s most popular dramas, including The Sopranos, The Newsroom, Entourage, Band of Brothers and Game of Thrones.
According to Foxtel, its new Anytime channel averages more than 27,000 downloads per day with Game of Thrones leading the charge. Episodes of the popular sword ‘n’ sorcery series have been downloaded more than 94,000 times since the service launched around a fortnight ago.
This was followed by Entourage which currently stands at 60,000 downloads and The Sopranos with around 43,000 downloads. For context, Foxtel is estimated to have around 2.6 million subscribers through cable, satellite and the internet.
While these figures might sound impressive, they remain a drop in the ocean compared to Game Of Throne‘s illegal download figures. According to data released by the file-sharing site TorrentFreak, the 2014 season finale was downloaded over one million times within 24 hours of the original broadcast.
The highest proportion of downloaders were alleged to have come from Australia, which can’t sit well with Foxtel. With that said, the way these statistics are gathered leaves a large margin for error, as we have noted in the past.
