Most email apps like Gmail or Outlook arrange your messages chronologically, starting with the newest first. If this approach has led to an overflowing inbox, consider looking at the oldest messages first.

Productivityist’s Mike Vardy suggests flipping the switch and start sorting your oldest mails first:
The one email trick I’ve used to keep my inbox in shape is to sort my incoming mail so that the oldest email is the ones I see first. I go by the “first in, first out” rule, and it works.
Simply by “flipping the switch” you can discover any stale emails and deal with them now instead of later — and no email should be dealt with too late if you maintain this sorting method.
Vardy notes that there’s no way to do this in Gmail, so Gmail users will need to use a third-party email client such as Thunderbird for Windows or Sparrow for Mac .
