Apparently, the Caribbean is more than just a sea or region of islands. It’s also a flavour. But what does it tastes like? Against our better judgement, we grabbed a cup from our local 7-Eleven to find out.
Having survived the brain-freezing madness of the 7-Eleven Slurpee Crawl Challenge, I’ve become something of a connoisseur when it comes to new Slurpee flavours.
But the company’s latest concoction has even given me pause.
Just what the hell kind of flavour is ‘Caribbean’? While “tropical” is often shorthand for pineapple, the islands of the Caribbean Sea contain no concrete food associations.
Could it be rum flavoured? Jamaican curry flavoured? Pirate flavoured? Johnny Depp flavoured, perhaps? The marketing offers no clues whatsoever.
The vagueness of it all reminds me of Apu Nahasapeemapetilon’s ‘Chutney’ flavoured squishie from an old episode of The Simpsons. Still, I was determined to give this thing a try, if only you so don’t have to.
It turns out that ‘Caribbean’ kind of tastes like a synthetic, syrupy variety of coconut. Kind of like a Bounty bar without the chocolate.
It reminded me of one of those overpriced virgin cocktails that you get roped into trying at tropical resorts: the kind that you immediately regret buying after taking one sip.
While I wouldn’t call the Caribbean Slurpee flat out horrible, it’s not a flavour I’d choose to partake in by choice. On the plus side, it is one of the “healthier” Slurpee options going, with just 1 per cent sugar in total.
Score: 5/10

I actually really like this flavour! It’s not as good as the 1% sugar one before it – fruit salad, I think it was called? – but it’s not bad.
any other low sugar variety’s on tap??
Their standard low sugar option is Mango.
As well as fruit salad I think.
I tried this flavour last weekend. I’m a sucker for low sugar items and I love this flavour. It’s Very zesty and sweet; the coconut comparison is on the mark. In a world filled with low sugar everything, where my daily coffee replacement includes such items as Monster Absolutely Zero, it’s a welcome change up for a not so guilty indulgence.
why not go a long black?
coffee goodness with no milk or sugar
Young at heart and at tastebuds. I had a five year addiction to McCafe skinny mochas with an extra coffee shot whilst employeed with McDonalds. That ended when I stopped getting them at half price. I’ve never enjoyed black coffee, too bitter for me. perhaps when I’m 40 😀
1% sugar, does it have that horrible chemical after taste associated with artificial sweeteners?
LOL we moved past saccharine a while ago. The newer versions are pretty good.
Boomzzilla, It doesn’t have that awkward sweet taste that comes from using a sweet n’ low tab in your coffee. May god have mercy on the next person that is curious enough to put a tablet directly on the tongue. Unbearable.
When I first tried this I definitely thought it was weird and a little vague but I have to say if you come back to it, it really grows on you.
that $5 swirly. cup, and $3 refills are really really bad for you!
take out the middle part of the cup, and fill as normal…
i’ve had a slurpee a day for about 3 weeks now!
that carribean flavour is quite nice, as said, like a bounty without the chocolate.
