The clock is ticking for Google Reader, and when the alarm goes off, it will be no more. One Australian programmer has developed an Open Source alternative that might be able to cure your RSS woes.
We’ve covered off a number of Google Reader alternatives in recent months, and Readable really just sits as another choice in the queue. It’s the brainchild of Melbourne-based programmer Elbert Filius, and offers many of the features you’d expect of a web-based RSS client, with a very minimalistic visual approach.
In theory it will take your imported Google Reader feed (if you’re unclear as to how to export your Google Reader feed, our handy guide will walk you through it.) although when I tested it wasn’t able to properly upload the relevant XML file; hopefully that’s just a small server bug.

I’m still waiting for my favourite clients to all choose the same replacement provider. That’s where it is important. For example Press for Android and Reeder for Mac and iOS
I’ve been using Feedly (http://www.feedly.com/) since I saw a recommendation on LH. It’s got my vote for best Google Reader replacement. Easy to import existing Google Reader feeds and a nice clean UI.
I use Feedly on the desktop and Nextgen on my phone. Both are good, but it took me a week to realise items starred or saved on one reader are not starred on the other. Duh.
Hi Guys,
If what you want is the ability to skim large #s of headlines, organize lots of feeds, label them, tag articles for later reading in one fast unobtrusive “no magazine layout” reader, SwarmIQ is your choice.
Sign up at http://www.swarmiq.com/register/GOOGLEREADERISDEAD , click on the Google reader icon to get all your feeds, and get up and running straight away.
Disclosure: I’m on the team that built this site 🙂 Also, we don’t have “Google Alerts” type functionality yet.
The referral is great and all, but not even a screenshot for the service before I surrender personally identifying information? Sorry mate, but I’m not going there.
If you are serious about Feeds then NewsBlur will be your go to. Allows gReader import but thereafter it runs stand alone so when they pull gReader (soon) you will still have a solid feed system (even Feedly hasn’t done that yet). The Web GUI is beautiful without attempting magazine style stuff. http://www.newsblur.com
The main problem I am having with all these replacement services is the Sync – Feedly works well for me as I can go from desktop to mobile to laptop with my read and starred items in Sync I am not sure about this service as there is little yo no info about it
I’ve been using Unbiasly, because of their pingme service, http://www.unbiasly.com/pingme .I think reader is closing because its not anything new or worthwhile and most readers will eventually end up following the same path. For the future, RSS and the way news in consumed in general needs some innovation. Aside from the site above, I think the site that will secretly be a good underdog is Flipboard.
