Regular readers will now that I’m rarely blown away by big screens or high-definition content. But having been to the first Australian demonstration of Sony’s massive 84-inch 4K television, I might just become a convert. This screen is ridiculously good looking when displaying high-resolution media.
What I really like about the 4K is that unlike earlier generations of hi-def televisions, you don’t have to be sitting on the other side of a large room for the screen to look good. 4K (or ultra-definition or UDTV) runs at 3840 by 2160 pixels, which is so detailed that you can sit at a distance of around 1.5 metres and not see individual pixels. The sample footage Sony showed off was stunningly clear: indeed, they verged at times on 3D (but without making me nauseous the way proper 3D does). Both moving images and stills looked amazing.
Yes, I know: that benefit will be most obvious with content shot on 4K cameras, which isn’t exactly falling off the virtual shelves right now. It’s also not a cheap option. Sony hasn’t finalised local pricing or release dates, but it’s likely to be north of $25,000. So buying this TV would be a massive indulgence. But man, it looks so good. I’d definitely contemplate a smaller model of the same.
