Some eight months after the device first appeared in Australia, BlackBerry maker Research In Motion has finally released version 2.0 of its PlayBook tablet software. The big addition to this release? Native email, calendar and contact apps and the ability to run Android apps that have been optimised for the device.
There are also enhancements to the BlackBerry Bridge software used to link to BlackBerry phones that let you remotely control the PlayBook, which could be useful for presentations.
PlayBook owners should see a notification to download the new version when connected to a Wi-Fi network. I’ll be updating my own PlayBook later today and checking out the new features. The lack of a built-in email client was one of the main criticisms of the original PlayBook, so it will be interesting to see if this gives the device a boost in the market.
