Telstra is no stranger to the world of 3G Wi-Fi hotspots. The latest addition to its range, the Ultimate, uses the higher-speed range of its Next G network for (at least in theory) faster performance of up to 20Mbps.
I say “at least in theory” because when I tested the Ultimate network last year it rarely reached those maximum speeds (though it did perform pretty well). Telstra is pitching the system at business users (you can connect up to five devices), so having as much speed as possible would be useful.
Business buyers can purchase the device now; a consumer version will go on sale on July 19, priced at $49 if you buy it on a 24-month contract. I was amused to note the device being left on a couch in the picture above, given its predecessor’s tendency to run at nastily warm speeds inside a shirt pocket.
