If there’s one thing that regulator the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) won’t stand for, it’s misleading claims about how much a service will cost or what it includes. Last year, it took Optus to court for advertising “unlimited” broadband and not disclosing shaping policies, and now it has slapped the telco with $178,220 in fines for misleading promotions relating to cap plans.
The ACCC took a dim view of a ‘Max Cap’ promotion Optus ran last year, since the quoted ‘maximum’ price was in fact the minimum amount consumers would pay, and not all call types were covered. The regulator identified 27 instances of advertisements promoting the deal, and fined Optus $6,600 for each one. You should always check the details carefully before signing up for any kind of contract cap, but it’s good to see that the way those deals are being promoted is being regulated.
