The Eastern Quoll, one of the snugliest (predatory) little marsupials that ever existed, has been extinct on the Australian mainland for over 50 years. Here’s a relaxing, uplifting way to spend your afternoon: Watching them reintroduced to the Australian mainland for the first time.
The Eastern Quoll is a nocturnal, carnivorous marsupial that was, originally, preyed upon by foxes to extinction in mainland Australia. While the Eastern Quoll has been extinct on the mainland for half a century, there exists a widespread population in Tasmania.
A host of organisations are working in collaboration with WWF Australia including Rewilding Australia, Devils at Cradle Wildlife Park, Trowunna Wildlife Park, Parks Australia, ANU and the Wreck Bay Aboriginal Communuity to breed and rewild the cute critters. This is the first translocation of the Eastern Quoll to the wild, so it’s a pretty big moment for Australian wildlife.
