Takeaway Truth: Guzman Y Gomez Breakfast Nachos

Takeaway Truth is an occasional Lifehacker feature where we compare marketing images against what you actually get served. Today: Guzman Y Gomez’s Breakfast Nachos. (Plus taste test!)

You’ve got to hand it to the Mexicans – they sure know how to make a mean morning meal. The mighty breakfast burrito needs no introduction, of course. But then there’s huevos rancheros (tortillas, rice, beans, and eggs with hot sauce), pan dulce sweet cakes with hot chocolate, tasty pancita soup and enchiladas with scrambled eggs. In a word:
Sabroso!

It therefore makes perfect sense for Guzman Y Gomez (GYG) to muscle in on the lucrative fast food breakfast market. When your biggest competition is a droopy sausage Mcmuffin, how could you possibly lose?

Served from 7am to 10am daily at select GYG outlets, the menu consists of breakfast burritos (natch), free-range scrambled egg bowls, quesadillas, churros, guacamole toast and – most intriguingly of all – breakfast nachos; otherwise known as ‘Chilaquiles’.

You’re probably wondering how breakfast nachos differs from regular nachos and the answer is hardly at all. The GYG Chilaquiles consists of fresh corn chips topped with salsa, melted Jack cheese, pico de gallo, guacamole and a choice of mild or spicy sauce. It’s basically the same dish as the lunch version minus the meat and veggies.

Here’s the nutritional damage: 1690kJ of energy, 9.8g of protein, 26.8g of fat, 29g of carbs, 4.7g of sugars and 804mg of sodium. In other words, it’s not something you’d want to partake in five days a week but as an occasional treat you should be okay.

We have to admit, we were a bit leery about undertaking this Takeaway Truth assignment. When it comes to false advertising, Mexican fast food seems to be one of the worst offenders. We once described KFC’s Taco Box as “week-old garbage mixed with surgery leftovers” – and that was being pretty generous.

So how does the real GYG Breakfast Nachos compare to the advert? Here’s a side-by-side comparison. The left image is a bowl of Chilaquiles as it appears on GYG’s menu board. The right image is what we actually got served at a Martin Place restaurant:

FYI: I took this photo in the street outside our office. Bystanders were nonplussed.

That’s… actually pretty darn good. The corn chips boast a slightly prettier bowl arrangement in the menu image but that’s a minor quibble. All in all, this is a strikingly accurate advert. Everything from the colours to the portion sizes are bang on. Good job, GYG.

Unfortunately, the Breakfast Nachos aren’t quite as impressive when it comes to taste. Speaking subjectively, nachos doesn’t fit the bill as a breakfast food. Corn chips smothered in sauce and melted cheese is a teensy bit too indulgent for my tastes. Mind you, as a hangover cure this would probably be the dog’s bollocks. (And for once, it doesn’t resemble them. Result!)
