No matter where you are in Australia, you’re subject to some extreme heat for the next three months (not you, Tasmania). You need to stay hydrated.
I spent most of the week so far parked right in front of the air conditioner, watching the cricket and trying not to stick to my chair. Air conditioning or not, hot temperatures make it more important than it already is for you to stay hydrated.
If you get too hot and haven’t consumed enough water, you’re opening yourself up to things like heat stroke, heat exhaustion, or even smaller issues like cramps or a heat rash.
Not sure how to bring more water into your life? Here are a few tips:
Carry a Water Bottle Around
This is a simple idea, but a powerful one. Just having water available to you all the time will likely increase how much of it you consume. Aim to have a full water bottle by your side at all times, and sip on in whatever you start to get thirsty.
Eat Hydrating Foods
There are a number of different foods that can also boost your hydration thanks to their water content. Some big ones include strawberries, apples, oranges, corn, and broccoli.
Order Water at Restaurants
When you go out to eat, order a glass of water. That’s not to say you can’t also have that beer or glass of soda, but make yourself drink water alongside it. Similar to the water bottle idea, if you have a glass of water on the table, you’re significantly more likely to drink it.
Make Flavored Water
Water, especially when you’re drinking it constantly, can get pretty boring. Spice up your water routine by making flavored water. You can use those flavored water packets, or even just throw a few pieces of fresh fruit, like strawberries or blueberries, into your water for a bit of a twist.
Set an Alarm
Is your water bottle always empty? If you have trouble remembering to drink water, try setting an alarm on your phone to remind you to fill up your water bottle every few hours. The reminder will ensure you go fit up your empty bottle or could be a good reminder to drink more water if your bottle is still full from the last alarm.

Now go back and replace every instance of the word “water” with “beer”.
(Except for the Flavoured section. That’s just silly.)
