iOS: Ever been curious about exactly how much the men and women at your office speak during a meeting? GenderEQ can track that and break it down into percentages.
When you start a meeting (or any conversation, really), turn GenderEQ on, and it will attempt to analyse the voices in the room as either male or female. As the conversation goes on, the percentages bounce up and down depending on who is speaking. Since this is just a computer, GenderEQ can only recognise voice frequency, which means it trips over people whose voices don’t fit gender stereotypes, but it’s still interesting to look at.
After running it through a few tests, GenderEQ does a decent enough job of differentiating between speakers, though it certainly shouldn’t be viewed as empirical data. Even just speaking to it by myself in a quiet room led to a 80/20 split, which means I must occasionally hit some higher frequencies. Regardless, GenderEQ is more about attempting to get a better idea of how gender dynamics work in an office, and to that end it does its job.

Wait… it only tracks 2 genders? Someone show this to Tumblr and watch it have a meltdown pronto!
The data this produces is next to useless. No notion that the people who need to communicate the most information in a meeting will be the ones speaking the most, no understanding that people asking questions speak far less than people answering them, no respect for different people being more verbose or concise to communicate the same thing, no breakdown of how many men or women are even present.
There needs to be both qualitative and quantitative data working together, otherwise the data is meaningless. It’s not a bad idea to monitor gender differences in companies but this app is a novelty at best.
