The best homemade pizza is made with the best ingredients, but that doesn’t mean those ingredients need to be complicated. In fact, the best pizza sauce has only one ingredient and it requires no cooking at all.
According to Aaron Quint and Michael R Bernstein (the pizza enthusiasts behind The Pizza Book), the most delicious sauce is the most elegantly simple:
The best tomato sauce for a “classic” Margherita pie involves one ingredient (high quality canned tomatoes) and one tool: your hands. Open the can, squish up the tomatoes, strain out some juice, and remove any hard bits, and that’s it. The best sauce you’ll ever have.
In terms of picking a “high quality canned tomato” San Marzano tomatoes are recommended by the experts, but cheaper brands are often just as good. (Indeed, a budget brand actually beat out San Marzano in a blind taste test.)

If that’s the case then I would wager the photo used is NOT a photo of the best pizza sauce… nice swirl though!
No, it’s not. But technically it’s the second best sauce. The best is exactly the same, except you grill/flash-roast fresh super ripe Roma tomatoes instead of opening a can of them. Same end result, but less flavour lost in the draining process.
Or just use tomato paste.
Well, technically, canned tomatoes have at least salt plus tomatoes. And tomato paste often has sugar as well – not “one ingredient”.
Can’t say I’ve ever made a “classic Margherita pie” before…
