Yesterday, the two US vice presidential candidates Tim Kaine (D) and Mike Pence (R) held their first and only debate before the election this November. This morning, fact-check what the candidates said with these roundups.
If you didn’t catch yesterday’s debate, you can watch it in its entirety here. As we’ve mentioned before, the media coverage you read can affect how you perceive a debate, so it’s a good idea to watch it for yourself first if you can. Once you’re ready, check out these fact-check roundups to see how the candidates’ claims hold up to scrutiny:
- Politico published 22 stories fact-checking statements from both candidates.
- Politifact annotated the entire debate transcript with fact-checks.
- CNN fact-checked statements in 12 categories from both candidates.
- NPR offered a transcript of the debate with live fact-checks and analysis throughout.
- The Washington Post fact-checked over 20 statements from both candidates.
- The Wall Street Journal offered live analysis and fact-checking during the debate.
- The Guardian fact-checked 27 statements from both candidates.
Early voting has already begun in some states.

I don’t think this is relevant to Australia.
I find most commentary on the elections disturbing. Commenting on fact checking is good, but Ars Technica (a site that I lost respect for several years ago) spends too much time personally attacking one politician and endorsing another.
In Australia, we do a better job of this because we compare policies of parties in our media And I’m yet to see any headline or article that summarises that (especially from sites like Ars that get involved in politics and spend most of their time on character assassination). There’s still personal attacks (Howard the bondage lover, Tony and his budgie smugglers, Gillard the witch), but it’s far better than I see from the US.
Couldn’t get through it, it was like watching dumb and dumber bitch slapping each other over and over, very cringeworthy.
I thought it was a horror version of the tattoo scene from Dude Wheres My Car?…
I think you’ll find that a few of those supposed fact check sites have a bias one way or the other. This election is proof that the USA is in its death throws as a Democracy, sooner or later something has to give. Given their love of flag waving and their deep belief that they are the world police, I’m going to go out on a limb here and say the next form of Governance will be some form of military system.
