Reader thdoan submitted this highly customised second screen using Rainmeter. Best of all there’s even a video showing you how it all works. If you like the look, here’s what you’ll need to make your own.
In this case, thdoan uses this setup as a second screen that provides a lot of visual information at a glance, while the primary display is used for, work, play, or other usual purposes. Here’s a still shot:
Since this is all built with Rainmeter, you’ll definitely need to know the ins and outs of that before you get started. We have a guide here that can help.
Once you have a feel for the basics, here’s what you’ll need.
- The TRON Legacy suite for Rainmeter for most of the look and feel
- The Marquee News Ticker skin for Rainmeter by Eclectic-Tech for the headlines just above the bottom of the screen
- The Fountain of Colours skin for Rainmeter by alatsombath for the audio visualizer at the bottom of the screen
- The Enigma skin for Rainmeter for additional elements
That’s about it. The TRON Legacy skin does a lot of the heavy lifting here, so if you get nothing else, get that. Additionally, thdoan says:
This is my new Rainmeter desktop for the second screen. It’s not too fancy, but it’s functional, and that was my goal — something that is practical and relatively distraction free. It has all the information I care about readily available at a quick glance. All my most used shortcuts are also a click away, as well as my scratchpad, trusty Winamp player (the controls only show on hover), and volume control. As a bonus, I also get to enjoy the spectrum analyser bars dance when the music comes on ^_^.
A number of the skins are tweaked too, so if you have questions about how they work, make sure to head over to the Flickr link below and ask your questions. While you’re there, sing your praises too and let thdoan know we sent you!
