Some gyms are better than others. They might have nicer facilities, a better price on membership or more bonus amenities to sweeten the deal. But none of that matters if it’s so far out of your way that you’ll never go.

You’ll probably come across a lot of great looking gyms as you shop around, but as Brittney Morgan at Apartment Therapy explains, you’re doing yourself a disservice if you don’t focus on location first. The ideal gym is one you can fit into your busy schedule. It should be close to your usual day-to-day activities, or in between your home and where you work. Even if the gym is somewhat close to you, you’ll have a tough time making your membership worthwhile if you have to go out of your way to get there — even just a little bit. Remember, a gym member that pays their fees and never shows is a gym’s dream client. Don’t be that person. Find a place you know you can get to easily, and go with it. Exercising on a regular basis is already a motivational challenge, so don’t make it any harder than it needs to be.

I’d go to the gym 20 minutes walk away 4-6 times a week. Without that 40 minutes of walking, I can go to the closer gym now 8-12 times a week. Convenience definitely matters.
My personal rule, and advice I give to others, is that a gym should be no more than 10 minutes away. Don’t give yourself extra excuses to stay home! NB: This obviously doesn’t apply if you are a training for a competitive sport and need a high performance facility/coach/specialty equipment, but stands for most people.
