Today, the world celebrates International Women’s Day, a global honouring of womanhood and recognition of female economic, political and social achievements. To mark the occasion, we’re asking our readers — both male and female — to wax lyrical about the special women in their lives; be it your mother, sister, girlfriend, wife, daughter, aunt, grandmother, gal pal, colleague or boss. Make your nominations in the comments; then post it on their social media page. Because they deserve it.

To get the ball rolling, I’m going to do the predictable thing and nominate my lovely wife, who is easily the strongest and most courageous lady I know. She’s also a saint for putting up with me. Over the past few years I’ve lost my wedding ring, taken her to McDonald’s for our anniversary, interviewed a stripper “for work” and cannibalised her placenta — all with nary a complaint. For this and so much more, I salute you Jillian.
Now it’s your turn. Let the women in your life know how great they are in the comments section below. (If you’re a woman, feel free to nominate yourself too; it’s your day and we want to honour you!)
Incidentally, the theme (and calls to action) for this year’s International Women’s Day is ““Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50-50 by 2030”. While nominally a celebration, the event also serves as a reminder that a lot more needs to be done to improve gender equality around the world. You can find out more about International Women’s Day 2017 at the UN Women website.

My mother- still working in her 60s, because her work keeps asking her to stay on. Ever indulgent of my geekiness despite not sharing an interest herself.Highly intelligent and passionate.
My sister- four kids, owns and runs her own business, has somehow managed to maintain her sanity and poise (which I’m pretty sure I would not do in her situation). Extremely quick-witted and clever with it.
My kindergarten teacher- 27 years on, always recognises and remembers me, and asks my parents how I’m doing when she sees them. A sharp, clever and kind woman.
My Nan and Grandma- Sadly no longer with us, but their kindly indulgences of me during school holidays will never be forgotten. However, they didn’t spoil me to the point of indolence- I remember my Grandma taking me to the zoo when I was very young, and we had hotdogs for lunch. An ibis swooped down and stole mine! My Grandma didn’t buy me another one, but instead shared hers with me. I remember it as an important moment about sharing what you have.
I don’t recall my Nan ever buying take away food (specifically- I’m sure she must have done at some point), perhaps because she was the most wonderful cook. I still try to replicate her chicken stew to this day.
Mums are the best,
Happy International Women’s Day!
Im surrounded by strong women, they have proven their strengths over and over again. Its the men im worried about sometimes, were terrible lol
Was kinda hoping to see a “your mum” comment in here 😛
My closest friends tend to be girls, they offer the best advice and help keep me sane.

I’m surrounded by amazing women, the woman who gave me life, the woman who gave my husband life, and I work with a team of ladies who are strong passionate teachers like myself who support each other professionally and personally (when needed at times). I’m also blessed with daughters, three of them, who each and every minute amaze me.
P.S. Chris, your wife sounds very understanding, bet she had (just) forgotten (and recovered) from that strip tease many years ago, so thanks for bringing it up again 😉
My wife is probably the one that is the biggest in my life now, especially with all the crap she goes through with me and what she has had to go through for our 2 boys, getting the wedding i doubt she ever dreamed of (married on a basketball court while pregnant), moving backwards and forwards from Tasmania and WA because i get home sick and then i don’t get home sick.
However the one that means just as much is a woman i never ever met, I don’t know her name or anything other than when she passed away she donated her organs and i was luckily enough to receive one, yes it probably says more for her family agreeing to it however if she did not discuss it before hand then it would not have mattered at all. So to her and my wife Thank you for everything you have done for me.
Fun fact i get to show my wife appreciation tomorrow as it is our wedding anniversary. I am not going to Maccas like you did Chris however we are going to a video game museum so not sure which is more disappointing for the other half.
