Your elevator arrives at a floor, the doors open, and nobody is there. You hammer on the door close button, but it doesn’t seem to work no matter how many times you press it. There’s a better way to get those doors shut and you on your way.
This video from the Tech Insider YouTube channel explains why it seems like every elevator’s door close button doesn’t work. No, it’s not a “placebo button” that is there to calm frustrated riders. The button is most likely functional, but it may not seem to work for a few different reasons. There could be a long delay, the button might be intended for emergency/testing purposes only and requires a key, or the button is physically broken. If you want the elevator door to close faster, just wave your hand in front of the door’s motion sensors. It will think somebody climbed on board and prepare to head to its next stop.
