Cruise port excursions can be a great way to explore each stop, but they can be pricey and come with all the hassles of other group tours. It might be tempting to hop on a bus and ride along, but if you can visit the same place on your own, save your money. Here’s why.
Skipping the group tours gives you more freedom to see the spots you’re looking forward to at your own pace. You’ll also spend less time travelling between the ship and sights, and you won’t have to wait for everyone to shuffle onto the bus before heading to the next destination.
Although these group excursions may sound like a good deal, you can often save money by buying museum tickets ahead of time online (and you avoid the cruise line’s often hefty markup.) If you don’t want to miss out on a guided tour, download an audio or written guide, or even book your own local guide.

All good points, but also keep in mind though that if you are on an organised group tour and you get delayed and miss final boarding time, you have a much higher chance of the ship actually waiting than if you go out on your own and get delayed.
They will flat out leave your arse behind. And if you’re on an island like Mystery island with no permanent population, you’ve got a long and potentially very expensive trip back to civilisation.
Skip the cruise in general.
