At E3, Microsoft announced backwards compatibility for select Xbox 360 titles on Xbox One — although the initial list of games is pretty small.
Whenever a new console launches, there’s intense interest in whether or not it will support the previous generation of games, simply because it’s a shortcut to a much larger games library. Microsoft has been hinting at the prospect of an Xbox 360 emulator for Xbox One for more than a year.
At its E3 presentation overnight, Microsoft announced that backwards compatibility will be coming to the Xbox One, with a limited set of titles available immediately for Xbox Preview members, growing to “more than 100 games” when the service launches in full later this year.
That initial list of games is small and somewhat RARE-centric:
- Banjo Kazooie: N n B
- Banjo-Kazooie
- Banjo-Tooie
- BattleBlock Theater
- Defense Grid
- Geometry Wars Evolved
- Hexic HD
- Jetpac Refuelled
- Kameo
- Mass Effect
- Perfect Dark
- Perfect Dark Zero
- Small Arms
- Super Meat Boy
- Toy Soldiers
- Toy Soldiers: Cold War
- Viva Piñata
- Viva Piñata: TIP
So how will it work? For disc-based games, there will apparently be a mandatory hard drive install, after which you’ll still also need the disc in the drive, so no sneaky sharing of Xbox 360 titles for you. Any digital games you’ve purchased should be made available for download as long as they’re both compatible and still offered in the 360 marketplace itself.

More games! More! RED DEAD! NOW! PLEASE!
WTF? Who gives a crap about Viva Pinata? They should be adding backwards compatability for Halo, Gears of War, Mass Effect, Forza, Mortal Kombat, etc first and foremost.
Viva Pinata!
That is the only game on that list I would actually want to play again.
Seriously, don’t waste time on this MS, just throw the money at doing a HD remaster of GoW and give the rest to Rockstar to make a new Read Dead Redemption for the ‘bone.
Oh sweet… thing this just puts the nail in the coffin of the 360 I still have at home, lol…
Time to get a 1TB Xbone!
