Windows: Flash drives come in many different shapes, but once you connect them to your PC and start browsing with Windows Explorer, what you see is exactly the same. If you’re on a PC, Windows lets you create a custom background with a desktop.ini file.
Whether you’re just trying to personalise your stuff or get it back if it gets lost, you’ll need to save the image to the root of the drive. Name it background.jpg
, and then create a file named desktop.ini in Notepad (make sure to remove the .txt extension). Put it in the root of the drive with this code in the file:
[ExtShellFolderViews] {BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC}={BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC} [{BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC}] Attributes=1 IconArea_Image=background.jpg
If you want to change the background image, just swap the background.jpg file for a new image with the same name.

One response to “Personalise Your Flash Drive With A Custom Background”
Only works with Win XP. Need a third party app to have it work for Win 7 (not sure if that even helps for Win8)
For Win7, let’s assume that I went with a third party app to make this work… the USB would not show the image on a different machine unless they had the app installed, correct? Thinking of custom flash drives for businesses and branding in the background.
if thats the case then this is a big fail from lifehacker. Using WinXP machines lol
