Netflix in the US is available across just about everything from smart TVs to consoles to toasters. OK, maybe not toasters, yet. Netflix in Australia’ has been coy about its device availability up until now, but it has just announced its first launch platform device.
There’s still no word on specific launch dates and pricing for Netflix, although rumours continue to swirl, but Fetch TV has today announced that it will offer Netflix as an integrated app on its second-generation Fetch TV box when the service does finally launch in Australia. If you’re on a first-generation Fetch TV box there’s no joy for you, although Fetch TV reckons that the vast majority of its userbase has switched over to the newer box.
It seems likely that Netflix will launch on every platform that there’s already a client for in overseas markets, because it already has a massive late mover advantage. To date, competing services are only available on a handful of platforms, with Stan offering Airplay and Chromecast streaming and Presto only available via Chromecast . Still, it’s interesting that the first client device announcement isn’t for one of those existing platforms such as games consoles or TVs, but instead a homegrown Australian PVR platform.

Great, but I use XBMC so I’m not going to get it because I don’t want another device connected to my TV. Why can’t I just a have a program that runs on windows.
Netflix already has (and no doubt will have) browser based playback support, so a full Windows box should be fine for it when it launches.
Alex, if you get the oppertunity, can you ask Netflix if they’ll make the Windows MCE plug-in avaliable in OZ? http://lifehacker.com/5262553/netflix-streaming-arrives-in-windows-media-center
Yes we need Netflix integration in WMC.
I was meaning Fetch TV in general.
If your running Kodi(XBMC) on Windows now, then Netflix does work, there is a plugin that loads a frameless chrome windows that allows you to browse and play Netflix using whatever remote you have setup now.
I wish they’d release a Plex plugin. All the TVs in my house run Plex on Mac Minis from a QNAP so any extra, separate client application adds complexity from a control perspective.
If I have to put down my harmony remote and pick up a keyboard/mouse just to switch from Plex to Netflix then chances are I’m not gonna do it…
Now all we need is decent content for Australian Netflix, then I might consider it. I am currently running US Netflix on 2 x XBox 360’s, Apple TV, Media PC, home PC and an iPad. Pretty much anything where I am able to change the DNS. FYI there is an application that integrates Netflix (US) with Windows Media Center.
What a very smart move…for both companies and for customers.
Last Thursday I changed my Optus $90 Home phone 200gb B/band bundle to the new discounted $90 Home phone Unlimited B/band with Fetch TV . And now Netflick too from either Feb 27 or March 31 ( depending on which news service you believe ) prob for $9.99 extra …
(I’m quite excited….the last time I had pay-tv….it was called Galaxy)
(it’s been buggging me…Is anyone actually happy with their FOXTEL service… the forums are full of complaints.)
