iOS/Android: Last year, Google bought Word Lens, the amazing app that translates signs in real time, and made it free for everyone. Now the company has gone one better and rolled the feature into Google Translate.
As you can see in the GIF above, the feature works just as it did in the Word Lens app. Simply tap the camera button, point your camera at the sign you want to translate, and the translated words will appear in their place.
This new update also makes the voice translation feature easier. You only have to tap the microphone once and from then on, Google Translate will automatically detect which (supported) language you’re speaking in, translate your message into the other, and speak it aloud. The only thing left to do is turn it into a fish and put it in your ear.

Just saying – Microsoft has had Bing Translator for about a year that does this already & it works pretty well too.
Interesting how it wasnt even mentioned
I had an app on my iPad a few years ago that could do this, can’t remember the name though.
Just tried it on my Nexus and it’s not like the gif at all. Maybe it’s just the iPhone version that does the ‘augmented reality version?
On my Nexus, have to line up the text, tap the screen to start the ‘scan’, a blue line runs across the screen and finds text in the image. Then I have to run my finger over the text to highlight what I want translated. Works fine, just not like the gif there.
Hasn’t this been available for at least a year, if not more?
Didn’t translate the text and substitute in place, but really that’s just fluff. The core feature has worked this way for ages.
