Lots of different sounds can make you more productive while you work or study (particularly music you’re not familiar with). However, it turns out video game soundtracks might be the best option of them all if you need to concentrate.
Why? As the duck meme (don’t ask me why) above states, this music is designed to sit in the background and inspire you — without interfering with your focus.
Brilliant tip courtesy of soccermom000 in the Advice Animals subreddit.

I always thought that the remixed version of Nine Inch Nails “Happiness in Slavery” on the “Fixed” album (The original album is called “Broken”. Geddit? Broken… Fixed) sounded a LOT like the background music to “Doom”….
Well, I suspect you might understand after reading this: http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Trent_Reznor
Well, shit.. Haha..
Wow I never knew that!
LoL @ this…
“with the first track reserved for game data (which can not be read by a CD player)”
I remember games like that, and the horrible noise the CD player would make when it actually did attempt to read the data track 😛
I can see how this could work, until Hell March comes on… 😉
Now listen to Batman Arkham’s soundtrack, then while you’re zoning, you yelled “I AM BATMAN”, then you realized you’re studying.
Mass Effect is a great soundtrack IMO
I’ve used this from time to time. There’s a flash based game called William and Sly. I let the game load and just sit in the background while I work.
The soundtrack for Journey is amazing, I have it on loop while I work.
Terra’s theme from final fantasty vi is my go-to study music.
I find RTS music (especially Red Alert/Red Alert 2) pretty conducive to ‘productivity’. For most of the day I’m clicking around in InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop so not that different from micro-managing a bunch of units in an RTS… or at least that’s what I like to picture in my head.
I always use them when writing. From my experience the eldar scrolls games are good. Even better is the OST for death note. DO NOT I repeat DO NOT listen to the dark souls OST… To full on.
Been doing this for years – Find the Witcher soundtrack is my favourite – but also quite enjoy Age of Conan.
Was hoping the Diablo 3 would be a good new work soundtrack but it just doesn’t have the same affect as some of the others I listen to.
I’ve been doing this for a while (although the idea that it was good because it’s meant to be background noise hadn’t occurred to me).
As @tricache said, the Mass Effect scares are fantastic. Also, if you are a spotify user, check out the playlist “Music to Save the World To”, which is a collection of game scores.
