An IKEA Hackers reader has come up with a cost-effective way to store her herb garden using an IKEA Skubb box. The entire garden cost her around $20, including the herbs and soil.
To make her DIY herb garden, Iris used a nine-compartment Skubb storage unit which retails in Australia for $9.99. (You can also get a set of six disconnected boxes for $7.99.) It was then a simple matter of filling them with soil and adding the herbs of her choice — too easy!
I placed the Skubb boxes on their side and filled them with soil. I pinched some extra holes in them for some extra drainage. Planted some different types of seeds. My salad, radish and herbs are already growing. Now waiting for the rest.
You can grab 25L bags of garden soil from most hardware supple stores for under $4, while most popular herb seed varieties tend to cost just a couple of dollars. The only downside is the lack of a protective cover, which could be problematic if you live near lots of wildlife.

I wonder how well they will hold up in sunlight. Would the material get brittle?
Who would have thought pots were prohibitively expensive here?
I’m not sure if you’re being sarcastic, but pots that size ARE pretty expensive!

Couldn’t you just cover it with a net – like a net curtain or something. Genuine question. Apologies if it’s a bit silly.
