Telstra has released pricing details for the BlackBerry Z10 smartphone — the first handset in Australia to run on the telecommunication vendor’s hotly touted Blackberry 10 operating system. Here’s how the announced plans compare to Optus’ offerings.
The Blackberry Z10 will be available to business users on Telstra’s $49.95 Mobile Connect Plan for $0 upfront over 24 months. Consumers will pay $7 monthly handset repayments on the $60 Every Day Connect Plan, also over 24 months. The Z10 can also be purchased from Telstra outright for $696.
As with Optus, Telstra customers don’t need a specific BIS plan to snap up the new handset. As we noted in our Optus coverage, this gives you a wider choice of potential carriers (and the ability to grey import the device if you like), but also means you don’t get unlimited email and browsing.
Here are the two announced plans in more detail.
Plan cost | Data | Calls/MMS | Handset charge | Total cost |
---|---|---|---|---|
$49.95 | 2GB | N/A | $0 | $1198.90 |
$60 | 1GB | $600 | $7 | $1608 |
And here’s how the Telstra plans compare to Optus’ offerings:
Plan cost | Data | Calls/MMS | Handset charge | Total cost |
---|---|---|---|---|
$30 | 200MB | $200 | $18 | $1152 |
$35 | 200MB | $200 | $17 | $1248 |
$50 | 1000MB | $500 | $10 | $1440 |
$60 | 1500MB | $650 | $6 | $1584 |
$80 | 2000MB | $850 | $2 | $1968 |
$100 | 3000MB | Unlimited | $0 | $2400 |
$130 | 4000MB | Unlimited | $0 | $3120 |
For consumers, the $60 Optus plan seems to be better value — it comes with an extra 500MB of data per month, an additional $50 of free calls and has a slightly lower minimum spend. Vodafone, meanwhile, isn’t offering the BlackBerry Z10 locally.
The BlackBerry Z10 will be available from Telstra in white only from 26 March. You can read everything you need to know about the new smartphone and OS here.
