Takeaway Truth is a new occasional Lifehacker feature where we compare marketing images against what you actually get served. Today: KFC’s Grilled Taster Box.

Fast food restaurants have been known to gild the lily when it comes to accurate depictions of their menu items. Far too often, the mouth-watering feast on the poster turns out to be a limp and oily morsel. In a bid to keep the fry-jockey overlords honest, we’ve decided to document the reality of fast food — it was either that, or go postal like Michael Douglas in Falling Down.
The Grilled Taster Box is the latest addition to KFC’s Snack Attack menu range. It comprises a “succulent grilled chicken breast strip”, fries and gravy for a very reasonable $2.50. However, just because it’s cheap doesn’t give KFC the right to create misleading images in its advertisements. We’ve subsequently put their offer under the microscope.
Here is the official promotional image for the KFC Grilled Taster Box:
And here’s a photo of what you actually get served.
KFC, that’s just rubbish. Where are the charred grill marks so prominently displayed on your poster? The size of the chicken piece is also considerably smaller and the chips look soggy and under-cooked. The gravy, meanwhile, was handed out separately instead of being snugly nestled in the box (although this may have been an executive decision by a lazy KFC worker).
