When we discussed using flax seed oil to season cast iron cookware last week, Lifehacker reader and food expert emannths brought up a great idea — if you’re going to bring your oven to temp to bake bread or another dish that requires high temperatures, rub some oil in those cast-iron pans and toss them in the oven to scratch off two items on your to-do list at the same time.

It seems like an obvious tip, but considering how much ritual there is around seasoning cast iron cookware and how often people set aside time to do it, the idea of seasoning your cookware while you bake a loaf of bread or a casserole on a different rack is one worth considering. It saves time, saves energy overall, and gets the job done nicely. Then, when you take out your food, you can turn the oven off and just leave the pan in the oven to cool.
