If don’t use the gym as much as you should, there might be another reason besides time-constraints or laziness: gyms are designed to be boring. Here are some secrets about how gyms operate, and how to improve your fitness program.Men’s Health writes that your gym is your enemy. They’re designed to be dull so members won’t come very often or stay very long; gyms actually want to keep the fitness fanatics away who might make the place look too crowded when new potential members sign up.
At the same time, the article goes, gyms are loaded with weight machines and cardio machines that are less about providing members the best fitness gear, but rather reducing injury and encourage members to move quickly through the circuit of exercise machines — hopefully with one of their personal trainers, on whom you’ll become dependent.
There are other “lies” about fitness discussed in this rather lengthy piece, as well as some advice, such as: go for strength training (finding those free weights and old-fashioned equipment by the edges of the gym), and ask your personal trainer for sport-specific training (e.g. ski racing or mountain climbing). You won’t need weight machines or elliptical trainers, and athletic training can get you committed to a real exercise program.
